RIDE AGAINST CRIME

Blue Knights Visit Mattawa     by   Tom O’Brien  -   Mattawa Recorder

Passers by were amazed at the sight of 46 sparkling motorcycles that filled the parking lot at Gagne’s Red & White Store in Rutherglen on Saturday August 10. The Blue Knights, a Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, decided to have a Bar B Q complete with cold water bar under a tent supplied by Crime Stoppers. (Their motto is a mind arresting picture of a dog removing flesh from a someone’s hind end followed by “Nip Crime In The Butt.”)

Riders registered from as far away as Peterborough, Orillia and Sudbury. All money raised was donated to Near North Crime Stoppers. To date in excess of $1900 has been raised and presented to Crime Stoppers for their use.

The twenty-thousand club members are all active or retired members of Police Forces in 29 countries of the World and have raised over 11.3 million dollars for various charities which include the North Eastern Ontario Cancer Centre in Sudbury and the Elliot Lake Palliative Care Program.

During a rushed interview, as rain threatened to dampen the spirits, OPP Detective Sergeant Jeff Dagg, NE Region, Criminal Investigations Unit said, “A total of 49 motorcycles registered for the ride which started at the North Bay OPP detachment and travelled along Lakeshore Drive in North Bay through Callander, Nipissing, Powassan, East Ferris Rutherglen (with a BBQ hosted at Gagne's Esso/Ace Hardware) then on to Mattawa and back to North Bay.”

He later revealed the interesting story about Crime Stoppers. “The Near North Crime Stoppers is a Non-Profit organization,” he said while seeking shelter from the rain, “that has served the citizens of North Bay and surrounding area for over twenty years. Crime Stoppers allows for people to provide anonymous information which is then given to the appropriate law enforcement agency. If the information given leads to an arrest or charge, the person who gave the information is eligible for a cash reward. Since inception, Near North Crime Stoppers has played a part in recovering over $46.5 million in property or drugs and has paid out in excess of $164,000.00 in rewards to the anonymous tipsters.”
